Cagliari Digital Nomad Guide

I moved to Cagliari for a week and stayed. The fibre is fast, the food is cheap, and the city is small enough to walk everywhere but big enough to never get bored. If you work remotely and want a Mediterranean base that is not overrun with other nomads, Cagliari deserves a serious look.

Internet: It Actually Works

Average broadband in the Cagliari province runs at 102 Mbps download, which is slightly above the Italian average. The median is 52 Mbps. Fibre-to-the-home is available in most central neighbourhoods, and about 11 percent of residents get speeds above 300 Mbps.

At Materia, we run a dedicated 1 Gbps symmetrical fibre line — not shared with other units or neighbours. In practical terms: Zoom calls in full HD with zero drops, uploading a 1 GB file takes about 10 seconds, and two people can stream and video-call simultaneously without noticing each other. We test the connection regularly because, as a remote worker myself, nothing kills productivity faster than flaky Wi-Fi.

A Workspace Built by a Remote Worker

I have worked from rentals across Europe, and the "workspace" is almost always a wobbly dining table with a kitchen chair. At Materia, the setup is what I wanted for myself: a height-adjustable standing desk, a 27-inch external monitor, a dedicated desk lamp, blackout curtains for video calls at any hour, and enough power sockets that you never unplug one thing to charge another. Both apartments have the same setup — it is not an afterthought, it is the reason many guests book.

Coworking Spaces

Cagliari has a growing number of coworking spaces. These four are where most people end up:

  • Copernico — Largo Carlo Felice, right in the centre. 250 workstations, meeting rooms, a café, and a rooftop terrace with views over the city. Walking distance from the train station.
  • Open Campus — On the Tiscali campus, 10 minutes from the centre. The largest coworking in Sardinia, running since 2013. Popular with startups and tech people.
  • Hub & Spoke — Downtown. Monthly desk rentals, and they let you try for 3 days free before committing.
  • Regus — Largo Carlo Felice. Monthly coworking access plans from EUR 9/day.

That said, most nomads who stay with us end up working from the apartment. The desk setup is genuinely better than most coworking spaces, and the espresso machine is right there.

Compared to Lisbon, Barcelona, or even Tbilisi at this point, Cagliari is noticeably cheaper — and the food is better. January and February are the cheapest months; accommodation prices can drop by half.

Best Neighbourhoods

Stampace

Where we are. Quiet, residential, walkable. The train station is here, the Castello quarter starts uphill, and Piazza Yenne — the main square with cafes and aperitivo spots — is a two-minute walk. Streets are well-lit and calm at night. If you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist, this is the neighbourhood.

Marina

The waterfront strip along Via Roma. Lively, more touristy, plenty of restaurants and bars. Good if you want to be in the middle of things, but noisier at night.

Castello

The medieval hilltop quarter. Beautiful narrow streets and panoramic views, but steep walks and fewer everyday shops. Great to explore, less practical to live in.

Villanova

The artisan quarter. Local feel, close to the botanical garden and the Roman amphitheatre. Quieter than Marina, with good restaurants nearby.

Where We Come In

Materia is two apartments in Stampace, designed with remote work as the starting point rather than an afterthought. 1 Gbps fibre, standing desk, external monitor, full kitchen, self check-in. Monthly discounts for stays of 28 nights or more.

  • Studio — 45 m², from EUR 85/night. Compact and efficient.
  • Suite — 65 m², from EUR 110/night. King bed, home theatre, more room to spread out.
