Cagliari Airport to City Centre

Take the train. It costs EUR 1.30, takes five minutes, and drops you in the centre. That is genuinely it. But if you want the full picture — bus, taxi, transfers, what to do after 23:00 — read on.

Train (the One You Want)

The Trenitalia regional train connects Elmas Aeroporto station directly to Cagliari Centrale. The station is inside the airport building — no outdoor walk, no shuttle bus.

  1. Follow signs to "Stazione" or "Train" after you pick up your luggage.
  2. Buy a ticket (EUR 1.30) at the self-service machines in the station. Cash and cards both work.
  3. Board any train heading to Cagliari. They come roughly every 20 minutes, running daily from about 05:30 to 23:00.
  4. Get off at Cagliari Centrale — five to seven minutes later. You are at Piazza Matteotti, right where the Stampace and Marina quarters meet.

From Cagliari Centrale, our apartments in Stampace are a 7-minute walk along Via Roma. The route is flat and well-lit — no issue even with a suitcase.

Bus

ARST, the regional bus company, runs two services between the airport and the city centre. They cost the same as the train — EUR 1.30 — but they are slower, less frequent, and leave from outside the terminal.

Line 160 runs mostly in the evening and at night, and is the one you want if you land after the last train. It leaves from the bus stop on the departures-level road (look for the blue-and-white ARST signs, one level up from arrivals), takes about 20 minutes, and terminates at Piazza Matteotti — the same square as the train. Line 9342 is a daytime connector running five times a day to the ARST autostazione, again near Piazza Matteotti. Tickets are sold at the newsagent inside the arrivals hall or at McDonald's opposite the terminal entrance; you can also buy them on the ARST mobile app. Validate the paper ticket the moment you board — inspectors are not frequent, but the fine (EUR 40+) eats the whole trip.

Honestly, unless the train is not running, the train wins on every dimension. The bus is a fallback for late arrivals and occasional engineering work on the line.

Taxi

There is no fixed airport tariff — taxis are metered — but the ride from Elmas to central Cagliari is short and predictable: 10 to 15 minutes and roughly EUR 25 to EUR 30 in normal traffic. A small airport supplement (around EUR 2) and an evening surcharge after 22:00 are added automatically by the meter. Drivers accept cards, but carry EUR 30 in cash just in case the machine is unreliable.

The taxi rank sits immediately outside arrivals, under the “Taxi” sign. Queues move quickly even on peak summer evenings. If the rank happens to be empty, call Radiotaxi Rossoblu (+39 070 400 101) or 4 Mori (+39 070 6655); a car typically arrives within ten minutes. Uber does not operate in Cagliari, so standard taxis are the only point-to-point option on the spot.

Cagliari Taxi Fares — What You’ll Actually Pay

Cagliari taxis run on a municipal metered tariff: a €3 starting fare (scatto iniziale), then €1.10 per km inside the city ring and €1.50 per km for extraurbana trips (airport, beaches, coastal towns). A €3 night surcharge applies after 22:00. Luggage over 10 kg adds €0.50 per piece, phone-dispatched pickups add €4, pets €2. Cash is preferred, though most drivers accept cards now — always ask before the ride starts.

Ranges are estimates based on the Comune di Cagliari metered tariff; the meter is the source of truth. For trips over ~30 km, ask for a fixed quote (“un prezzo fisso”) before leaving — NCC private drivers often beat taxi metered fares on longer routes.

Private Transfer

Pre-bookable sedans start from about EUR 44 one-way and EUR 88 return. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign, helps with luggage, and takes you to your door — useful if you arrive with young children, heavy bags, or on a flight where time zones have you half-conscious. Welcome Pickups, Shuttle Direct, and Jayride all serve the route; Materia can arrange one for you directly if you mention it when booking, and we also keep a shortlist of local drivers who speak English.

Car Rental

Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Maggiore, and Locauto all have counters in the arrivals hall with cars parked in the covered garage two minutes away. The drive to central Cagliari takes 10 to 15 minutes via the SS130 and the viale Elmas — easy, flat, and signposted. Unless you plan to explore outside the city though — Villasimius, Costa Smeralda, Chia, the inland mountains, or the Barbagia — you do not need a car at all. Central Cagliari is compact and walkable, parking in Stampace and Castello is limited and paid (EUR 1 to EUR 1.50 per hour on blue-line street spots, or EUR 15 to EUR 20 per day in a garage), and the historic centre has ZTL restricted-traffic zones that catch unfamiliar drivers with automatic fines. A one- or two-day rental partway through your stay, picked up from a city-centre branch, is usually the most efficient setup.

Arriving After 23:00

Trains stop running around 23:00 and the last ARST bus (line 160) leaves at around 23:45, after which the taxi rank is your realistic option. Taxis are present at the rank for every scheduled landing — drivers follow the inbound flights on the airport app. The ride into Stampace takes 12 minutes and costs EUR 27 to EUR 32 including the late-evening surcharge.

There is no overnight arrivals lounge at Elmas — the terminal closes once the last flight has cleared customs. If your flight is significantly delayed and you are worried about onward transport, our WhatsApp line (+39 351 770 0425) is monitored 24/7. Materia uses 24/7 self-check-in with a one-time digital access code sent to you the day you arrive, so whether you reach Via Mameli at 15:00 or 02:30 the door opens the same way: flat, well-lit, no key handover, no front-desk to find.

What to Expect When You Exit Cagliari Centrale

Cagliari Centrale station is small by European standards — a single-level hall with a handful of shops and a bar. You exit onto Piazza Matteotti, a narrow square lined with mature ficus trees, bus stops, and taxi ranks. Across the square is Via Roma, the waterfront boulevard that runs along the port. If you turn right on Via Roma and walk for three minutes you reach Largo Carlo Felice, the long palm-lined street that climbs towards Piazza Yenne and the heart of Stampace. Materia's apartments on Via Mameli are seven minutes on foot from the station along flat, well-lit streets — even a wheeled suitcase and a tired toddler will make the distance without trouble.

If you land hungry at a reasonable hour, there are two short detours worth making on the walk in: Caffè Svizzero on Largo Carlo Felice (open from 06:30) for the most reliable espresso in the old town, and Antica Cagliari on Via Sassari for a proper Sardinian arrival snack — culurgiones or a plate of fregola with clams. Both are within the seven-minute walk to our apartments and will open the evening calmly rather than dropping you straight into a jet-lagged struggle with a fridge.

Luggage, Strollers and Accessibility

Both Cagliari Centrale and Elmas Aeroporto stations are step-free. The airport terminal is single-level, all trains have level boarding, and the walk from Cagliari Centrale to Stampace is on smooth pavements with gentle gradients. Elevators are available at the Bastione di Saint Remy (the panoramic viewpoint above the port) and at most museums. The only real obstacle for wheeled luggage is the tangle of narrow cobblestone lanes inside the Castello quarter — if that is your destination, a taxi is worth it. For Stampace, Marina, and Villanova the pavements are flat and the surfaces predictable.

Luggage storage inside the station is offered by KiPoint at roughly EUR 6 for the first five hours, which is useful if you land early and your apartment check-in is not ready. Materia guests can drop bags with us from 11:00 regardless of the official check-in time — just message us on WhatsApp and we will unlock a secure luggage area in the hallway.

Return Journey: Centre to Airport

For the trip back, reverse the best option: walk or taxi to Cagliari Centrale, buy a ticket at the automatic machine (EUR 1.30, cash or card), validate it at one of the green Trenitalia machines on the platform, and hop on any regional train heading west — they all call at Elmas Aeroporto. Give yourself 90 minutes from our front door to the boarding gate for an international flight and 70 minutes for a domestic; the airport is small enough that this is very comfortable. If you leave before 06:00, when the first train runs, taxi is the only option — roughly EUR 28 from Stampace, book the night before if the flight is before 05:30.

About Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG)

Cagliari Elmas (IATA code CAG) is Sardinia's busiest airport, handling around 4.5 million passengers a year. It is a compact single-terminal airport served primarily by low-cost carriers — Ryanair, easyJet, Volotea, and Wizz Air account for the majority of traffic — with a smaller presence from ITA Airways, Lufthansa, and charter operators. Direct routes cover most major European capitals and regional hubs: London, Milan, Rome, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Madrid, and a seasonal spread that grows sharply from April through October. In the off-season (November to March) connections thin out, and many routes run two to three times a week rather than daily.

What time does the last train from Elmas Airport to Cagliari run?+

Not for the city itself. The historic centre, the San Benedetto market, and Poetto beach are all reachable on foot or by local bus. You only need a car for day trips to Chia, Villasimius, or the Barbagia interior. Renting for one or two days partway through your stay is usually the most efficient approach — parking inside Stampace and Castello is limited, paid, and restricted by ZTL zones that catch unfamiliar drivers.
